Day 12: Fjord Country and Bergen
A Day of Stunning Beauty
Today was another long travel day, but it was also so much more. The sights along the way were stunning and something we had all been looking forward to. Today, it was as much about the journey as it was about the destination. We took many photo stops as our bus made its way through the mountains and on to Bergen. Our route took us on the highest road in Northern Europe. Ironically, it also took us under ground through the longest tunnel in the world . . . 15 miles! The sites included everything from wide open rocky landscapes to snow and 8,100 foot peaks to the beautiful green fjords along the coast. Norway is truly a stunningly beautiful country. I think we may have filled half of our camera capacity on this day trip alone! There were postcard moments at every turn. It was also cool to see the stone cairns that dotted the vast open spaces. Some of them had been there for many, many years. On one of our stops, we added a group photo to the mix! We have such a nice group of co-travelers to share this experience with. It's nice to have a photo of the group. On our way to the fjords, we stopped for a picnic lunch in a cute little town. Following Asa's directions, we had taken a small take-away bag of leftovers from our breakfast buffet. I had the best jam ever, and I spread it over my take-away pancakes. The jam was created from a plant that grows just one fruit each! That must take a lot of plants! When we got to Fram, we boarded our boat for a two hour cruise of the Sognefjord. It was a beautiful cruise and offered the full gamut of weather . . . sun, rain, heat, and cool. After our cruise, it was on to our final stop, Bergen. |
